Oats are an early spring planted crop that can give you great hay or grain for your livestock. Oat varieties have some specific traits that can make them more adaptable to your individual needs. Some are grown for high grain yields, some are more suited for forage, and yet others are called dual purpose oats due to their ability to produce both forage or grain. Many also use oats as a cover crop for new alfalfa fields.
TIPS FOR PLANTING:
Plant as early as possible
Plant shallow - just deep enough to cover the seed. This will help to ensure that the crop will mature before the heat of the summer.
Test soil for fertility requirements
Oats planting rate: 50-60 lbs per acre dry land and 70-90 lbs per acre irrigated.
